A shower drain usually does not clog all at once. It starts with water taking a little longer to disappear. Eventually, you are standing in a puddle before the shower is over.
Hair is usually the main cause. Strands collect inside the drain and catch soap residue, skin oils, and other debris. As more material sticks to the clog, the opening inside the pipe gets smaller.
Many shower and tub clogs are close enough to the fixture to clear without major plumbing work. The problem changes when the blockage is farther down the line or keeps returning after you remove the visible debris.

Why Shower and Tub Drains Clog So Easily
Every shower sends more than water down the drain.
Hair, shampoo, conditioner, body oils, soap residue, shaving products, and small pieces of debris all pass through the same opening.
Hair creates the biggest problem because it catches easily. Once a few strands become trapped around the drain assembly or inside the pipe, other material begins sticking to them. The clog grows from there.
Hair Is Usually the Main Cause
Hair clogs can form directly below the drain cover or farther down inside the trap and branch line.
Long hair tangles easily, but short hair can cause the same problem when enough of it combines with soap and other residue.
Pulling out one clump of hair may immediately improve drainage. If the tub starts slowing down again soon afterward, more material may still be sitting deeper inside the line.
Soap and Personal-Care Products Add to the Buildup
Soap and personal-care products do not always rinse completely out of the pipe.
Bar soap, conditioner, body oils, shaving products, and similar materials can leave a coating behind. Hair and debris then stick to that coating instead of moving freely through the drain.
Hard water can add another layer. Mineral deposits create a rougher surface inside the pipe, giving hair and residue even more places to collect.
What to Try First for a Slow Shower or Tub Drain
If the problem just started and only one shower or tub is affected, begin with the easiest fixes.
- Remove visible hair. Take off the drain cover or stopper if it can be removed easily and pull out anything you can safely reach.
- Use a plastic hair-removal tool. A flexible plastic drain tool can grab hair sitting just below the opening.
- Try a plunger. A small plunger may move a soft clog that is close to the fixture.
- Run hot tap water after removing the debris. This can help carry loosened soap residue farther through the line.
These steps work best when the clog is close to the drain. If the visible hair is gone but the tub still empties slowly, the blockage may be farther down the pipe.
Why Baking Soda and Vinegar Often Feel Like They Worked
Baking soda and vinegar create a lot of bubbling, which can make it look like the drain is being cleaned.
The reaction may loosen some soap residue and surface grime. That can improve drainage temporarily.
What it does not do well is remove a packed clump of hair. If hair is holding the blockage together, physically pulling it out is usually more effective.
This is one reason a drain may seem better for a short time and then slow down again. Some residue moved, but the hair remained.
Why Chemical Drain Cleaners Are Not the Best Next Step
Standing water in a tub can make a bottle of chemical drain cleaner look like an easy solution. The problem is what happens when the product does not completely clear the drain.
Chemical cleaners create heat and can leave caustic liquid sitting inside the fixture. They can also be rough on older or weakened plumbing. In some cases, the chemical only burns a small opening through the clog while most of the debris remains inside the pipe..
If you already poured chemical cleaner into the drain, tell your plumber before they begin working on it. Standing water may still contain the product even if some time has passed.
When a Drain Snake Helps
A manual drain snake reaches farther into the pipe than a plastic hair-removal tool.
The flexible cable can break through a blockage or pull some of the material back out. For a straightforward hair clog, that may be enough to restore normal drainage.
A snake has limits, especially when the inside of the pipe is coated with soap, grease, mineral scale, or other buildup. It may create an opening without removing everything around it.
When the same drain repeatedly slows down, can clean buildup from the pipe walls instead of only opening a path through the blockage.
Signs the Problem Is Deeper Than One Shower
One slow shower usually points to a clog near that fixture. Several plumbing problems happening at once can point farther down the drainage system.
Watch for these signs:
- The shower and bathroom sink are both slow.
- The toilet gurgles when the tub drains.
- Water rises in the tub when a nearby toilet is flushed.
- More than one bathroom is draining slowly.
- The same shower clog returns shortly after it is cleared.
- There is a sewer odor along with the slow drainage.
When fixtures begin affecting each other, the blockage may be in a shared branch line or the main sewer line rather than directly below the shower.
How to Prevent Hair Clogs From Coming Back
Keeping hair out of the drain is much easier than removing a packed clog later.
- Use a hair catcher over or inside the drain.
- Clean the catcher regularly.
- Brush loose hair before showering if shedding is a frequent problem.
- Pick visible hair out of the drain instead of rinsing it down.
- Address slow drainage before the tub begins holding standing water.
No drain stays perfectly clean forever. Reducing the amount of hair entering the pipe can still make a major difference in how quickly buildup returns.
When It Is Time to Call AYS Plumbing
A completely blocked tub, a clog that repeatedly comes back, or several slow fixtures at the same time deserves a closer look.
Removing hair from the top of the drain will not fix a restriction that is farther inside the plumbing system.
